Tabuan Lasa marks 3rd founding anniversary.

Saturday, March 26, 2011

THE Municipal Government of Tabuan Lasa, one of the newly-created municipalities in Basilan province, has lined up several activities as it commemorates its third founding anniversary on Tuesday, March 29.

Tabuan Lasa Mayor Muctar Junaid said the different activities, which include sports competition like swimming, volleyball and boat race, reel-off Sunday.

Junaid said they will inaugurate two motorboats -- worth P400,000 each - locally known as "jungkung", which will be used by the municipal health and municipal division of schools offices.

The acquisition of the two motorboats will ensure the delivery of basic services to the town constituents by the two offices, he said.

Junaid also said that the use of motorboats is essential since the municipality of Tabuan Lasa comprises 12 barangays located in four separate islands, namely: Tapiantana, Bubuan, Lanawan and Saluping, which the name of the town was derived.

Tabuan Lasa was created out of the 12 barangays of Sumisip municipality that were not on Basilan mainland by virtue of Muslim Mindanao Autonomy Act 187, which was ratified in a plebiscite on March 29, 2008.

Tabuan Lasa has a population of 25,959 based on the population census of 2007.

Junaid said the municipal government also turned over mono block chairs to both elementary and high schools as part of their support to the education sector in the municipality.

Agar-Agar seedlings will also be distributed to the seaweed farmers in the island town, Junaid said.

He said they have invited visitors, mostly town officials from other Basilan towns and from other places in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm), to grace this year's anniversary of Tabuan Lasa.

This year's guest speaker is Basilan Congressman Jim Hataman.

The other visitors include high ranking military and police officials who were also invited to grace the town's 3rd anniversary themed "Unity: The Key to Progress and Prosperity."
